The Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) Tasmania is a non-profit community legal service specialising in environmental and planning law.
- provides volunteer opportunities for law students;
- promotes public participation in resource management decisions;
- produces a range of useful publications for the community and practitioners; and
- provides advice to unrepresented litigants to ensure a more efficient legal process.
For 18 years, EDO Tasmania has received its core funding from the Australian Government. The Federal government recently announced that all funding to EDOs would be terminated. From 1 July 2014 EDO Tasmania is without sufficient income for operating costs. While efforts are being made to re-instate the government contribution or secure alternative funding, $100,000 is required immediately to ensure the doors can be kept open for the next 12 months.
