On 27 October the Magistrates Court was delighted to launch the Tasmanian Coronial Practice Handbook, in association with the Law Foundation of Tasmania. Coroner McTaggart said, “The Handbook is only the second of its kind in Australia. Tasmania is leading the way in coronial practice in the country, providing quality information to the legal profession and the public to enhance access to justice in the community.” The Handbook is the result of a thorough consultation process which involved 37 different community, government, medical and legal groups.
Coroner McTaggart went on to say, “The Handbook has been developed in order to provide legal education to the legal profession on the unique nature and aspects of the coroner’s court. It will also serve to educate members of the public about the role and functions of the court, thereby increasing access to justice of vulnerable sections of the community.” The Handbook provides one comprehensive and easily-accessible reference point for information on the coronial system in Tasmania.
The Handbook is now available in both a print version and a fully searchable online version on the Magistrates Court Web Site – www.magistratescourt.tas.gov.au . The Hobart Coroners’ Office, with the assistance of the Law Society, will distribute the Handbook to all Tasmanian law firms and other relevant organisations and services in the coming weeks.
