This session will provide a brief update on the year ahead and in review, and discuss the following cases:
- Tesseract International Pty Ltd v Pascale Construction Pty Ltd [2024] HCA 35: proportionate liability and arbitrations.
- Piscioneri v Whitehouse [2024] TASFC 4; [2024] TASSC 2: restraining practitioners from acting where "inside knowledge".

Luke Taylor, Crown Counsel, State Litigation Office
About the Presenter:
Mr Luke Taylor is Crown Counsel at the State Litigation Office. Luke was previously a partner in HWL Ebsworth’s Hobart office. He worked in the firm’s Insurance and Safety groups, and specialised in workers compensation, CTP, public liability and work health and safety matters. Before that, Luke worked at two Tasmanian firms, as well as working in the then civil litigation section of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Luke is currently the Treasurer of the Law Society of Tasmania Council, and serves as Chair of the Society’s Litigation Committee. He has also been a national board member of the Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA) and was the national lead of AILA’s Marketing & Promotion Portfolio, and he remains a State Committee member for AILA.

About the Presenter:
Mr Andrew Buckley joined Tierney Law in 2016 following the merger with Toomey Maning and Co. Andrew is a Director and Leader of Tierney Law’s Disputes & Litigation Practice Area. Since being admitted to practice in 1991, he has practiced almost exclusively in civil litigation. Andrew’s experience includes the following areas of law: building and construction disputes; credit default enforcement; personal injury compensation; general commercial litigation; estate-related litigation; insolvency-related advice and property-related disputes. He is a current member of the Litigation Committee for the Law Society of Tasmania and the business networking organisation “Business Over Breakfast”.
