The Council of the Law Society of Tasmania elected Amelia Higgs as its new President on 11 October 2025.
Having grown up in Devonport, Amelia came to Hobart in 2008 to study at the University of Tasmania. She practices in the Hobart office of Dobson Mitchell Allport and is the Principal Solicitor leading the family law team there. In addition to working with private clients, Amelia is regularly appointed as an Independent Children’s Lawyer in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia. She also coordinates and delivers the Family Law unit at the Tasmanian Centre for Legal Studies.
Amelia said “I’m honoured to be elected as President of the Law Society of Tasmania. I hope to be approachable, proactive and innovative in this role, and look forward to serving the Tasmanian legal profession and the broader community over the next 12 months.”
The President intends to continue the efforts of past Presidents and Councils, with a particular focus on:
- Addressing the Legal Aid funding crisis,
- Improving the efficiency of the court system, especially in criminal justice,
- Attracting and retaining lawyers to the Tasmanian profession, particularly to the North and North-West regions, and
- Supporting the profession with the roll-out of Anti-Money Laundering obligations.
