Refund & Cancellation Policy and T&Cs of Registration for CPD and Other Events

By registering for a Law Society of Tasmania (the Society) CPD event you agree to the Cancellation & Refund Policy and Terms & Conditions stated here. Booking fees for all CPD activities are payable upon registration. For more information, see CPD FAQs.

Registration: This means an event booking made prior to the relevant event through the Society’s online booking portal. Registration includes event bookings for early career lawyer events.

Venue Access: Please note that as the Society’s building at 28 Murray Street, Hobart was built in 1876 there is no lift or disability access to the downstairs training area. The Society’s building at 56 Charles Street, Launceston was built in 1860 and there is no lift or disability access to the upstairs rooms.

CPD Points: Any CPD points listed in a CPD event are provided as a guide and registrants should satisfy themselves about the nature and quantity of CPD points they can claim for the activity. Please refer to Practice Guideline no.4 HERE for details.

Non-Member Registrations: Conditions apply at the discretion of the Society. The Society will be in touch if you are not eligible to register and a refund will be issued.

Refund/Cancellation: By registering for a Society event you (as a member or non-member) agree to the Society’s terms and conditions listed here.

Important Copyright Notice: Papers and materials supplied in association with any Society event, activity and recording are subject to copyright and are provided for the registrant’s use only. They may not be shared, copied, reproduced, adapted, transmitted, or otherwise distributed, nor may they be modified or reposted to other sites in any manner.

1. Administrative Fees
For the convenience of Society members, the Society’s Trybooking event registration portal is open for several weeks prior to an event to take credit card bookings. Due to the additional administrative load placed on the Society team when bookings are either sought after the event close date or when invoices must be generated, the Society charges the following administrative fees.

These fees are applicable, and will be added to the registration cost, for each individual registration sought after the event closing date or where an organisation or individual is to be invoiced instead of using the Trybooking portal.

Standalone, Half-Day and Social Events – A $15 administrative fee on each individual registration.
Conferences* – A $30 administrative fee on each individual registration.

*T&Cs applicable to conferences running more than one day may differ from those listed here. Registrants are notified in those event listings of the T&Cs at the time of registration.

2. Standalone Events – in-person, livestreamed and social events

  1. All cancellations must be made in writing by email to cpd@lst.org.au.
  2. If you notify us in writing by email more than 7 days before the event, you may choose to nominate a colleague to attend in substitution or receive a refund. The refund will be issued less a 15% cancellation fee. To claim a refund, contact the Society at cpd@lst.org.au.
  3. If you notify us in writing within 7 days or less before the event, you may nominate a colleague to attend in substitution. A substitution is to be notified before the event day. No refund is issued.
  4. Recordings of events, once downloaded, are non-refundable.
  5. Social events – These terms and conditions are applicable to dinners and other catered functions attached to Society events.

3. Conferences and Half-Day Events

Terms and Conditions applicable to conferences running more than one day differ to those listed here. Registrants are notified in those event listings of the terms and conditions at the time of registration. 

  1. All cancellations must be made in writing by email to cpd@lst.org.au.
  2. If you notify us in writing by email more than 14 days before the event, you may choose to nominate a colleague to attend in substitution or receive a refund. The refund will be issued less a 20% cancellation fee. To claim a refund, contact the Society at cpd@lst.org.au.
  3. If you notify us in writing within 14 days or less before the event, you may nominate a colleague to attend in substitution. A substitution is to be notified before the event day. No refund is issued.
  4. Recordings of events, once downloaded, are non-refundable.

4. Viewing Licence – Events and Recordings
Law Society of Tasmania CPD event registrations and recording purchases grant one viewing licence exclusive to the registered purchaser. Due to licensing restrictions the registered purchaser is the only person who can claim CPD points for audit purposes. So if you are not registered for an event or you have not purchased the product, or had this done for you by support staff, you cannot claim CPD points for viewing or attending. This is particularly important to note when tallying up your CPD points for end of CPD year compliance or audit purposes. As a Society member, to sustain the Society’s not-for-profit comparatively low cost program for you, your assistance in this good-will arrangement is critical.

Program Sustainability
The Society encourages the good-will observation of the Society’s viewing licenses as this model is critical to the sustainability of the Society’s not-for-profit program and affordable pricing for Society members, which includes:

  • Accessible and diverse professional development.
  • Easy member login registration and member benefits (pricing and availability)
  • Dedicated program team.
  • Responsive program development and event management.
  • Quality presenter procurement and preparation – experts and professionals renowned-in-their-field.
  • The ability to pay fees (where applicable, for fee-earning trainers) whilst maintaining reasonable/accessible pricing for members.
  • Maintenance – technology and equipment.
  • Quality venues, livestream opportunities and recordings.

5. Cancellation or Alteration of an Event
The Society has the right to cancel or alter any of its events at its discretion. The Society intends to run live programs as advertised but reserves the right to change the programs without notice which includes to be conducted online and to cancel if there are insufficient registrations. Where an event is cancelled, registrants will be notified by email and offered the opportunity to either receive a full refund or to transfer to the next available Society CPD event.

6. Privacy Statement
By registering participants acknowledge and consent that during their attendance at the event their images or voices may be recorded, via video, photograph or by any other means, by the Society or its delegate which may be distributed or published at the discretion of the Society. If you do not wish to be recorded, you are required to formally advise the Society prior to the event. Unless you advise otherwise, the personal information you provide to the Society may be used to assist in the administration of this event. This may include the provision of delegate information to the venue, presenters, facilitators and sponsors. Name lists may also be provided to other delegates.

7. Limitations of Liability and Indemnity
Provisions of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and other laws in force from time to time in Australia may impose guarantees, warranties, conditions and obligations on the the Law Society of Tasmania (the Society) (implied terms). If any implied terms apply, to the extent permitted by law, the Society’s liability and your sole remedy will be limited to the refund of any fee you paid to the Society. Subject to any implied terms, all guarantees, representations, conditions and warranties of any nature are expressly excluded. Subject to any implied terms and to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the Society, its employees and agents will not be liable for personal injury or death, property damage, or any other loss (including without limitation, liability for negligence, breach of these terms or any other agreement), damage, cost or expense (including, without limitation, loss of profits, business interruption, loss of information, indirect, special, punitive or consequential loss or damage) that you may incur or suffer arising out of or in connection with Society events.

8. By Registering You Agree To The Following
By registering you agree to fully indemnify and hold the Law Society of Tasmania (the Society) harmless from any claim, cost, demand, liability or damage (including legal costs, professional costs and other expenses on a full indemnity basis) incurred by the Society and/or its agents arising out of or in connection with Society events following: (i) any breach of rules and regulations relating to the venue or accommodation; (ii) any damage done to the venue or accommodation, or to any venue or other third party property or equipment; and (iii) any injury suffered by any person, animal or item caused by or in consequence of any act or omission by you.
