Thank you to those of you who attended the Opening of the Legal Year Dinner last Friday. Thank you also to Shelley Riesley and the staff at the Law Society who organised a highly enjoyable event.

At the dinner, we were fortunate to hear from Hayley Fenton, an alumna and ambassador of the Smith Family, which is my chosen charity for my term as President. Hayley’s story of overcoming financial adversity as a teenager and young person to graduate university with a double-degree in law and psychology was inspiring to say the least. It is undoubtably Hayley’s powerful words which enabled us to raise $6,230.00 for the Smith Family on the night. A further $530 was donated through the ticket sales. Thank you to everyone who generously donated.

We fell just shy of the target for the evening, which was $6,960.00. This amount will help ten Tasmanian students to overcome educational inequality caused by poverty, to ensure they can reach their potential.

The donation page is still open and will be accessible for the rest of my term. A link has been placed on the main page of the newsletter, and is also available here: The Law Society of Tasmania
