The Southern Early Career Lawyers South Committee (SECL) (previously known as the Southern Young Lawyers Committee or SYLC) is a committee of the Law Society of Tasmania that promotes the interests of early career members of the Tasmanian legal profession in the southern regions of Tasmania. All members or associate members of the Law Society of Tasmania who have ten years or less post-admission experience in the legal profession within a State or Territory of Australia are deemed to be members of ECL.
Early career lawyers from local firms and government departments can get involved with the SECL, as well as representatives from the University of Tasmania’s Law School and the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course.
The SECL generally meets once a month to discuss issues relevant to early career practitioners and soon to be admitted practitioners / graduates. The SECL liaises with the Law Society of Tasmania to develop initiatives that address these concerns. Of particular interest to the SECL is the mental wellbeing of graduates and early career practitioners, which has emerged as a critical matter in recent years. The ECLS is committed to acknowledging and addressing this issue and does so by promoting awareness and arranging activities that encourage a positive work/life balance. In addition to its policy framework, the SECL is also engaged in organising professional and social events for the wider profession. Such activities include CPD activities, the annual Tasmanian Golden Gavel competition, bi-annual long lunches and end of year functions.

The North-West Early Career Lawyers Committee (NWECL) (previously known as the North-West Young Lawyers Committee or NWYLC) is a committee that promotes the interests of early career Tasmanian legal professions on the north-west coast. The NWECL is comprised of early career practitioners from local firms as well as members of Tasmania Legal Aid, Tasmania Police and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. All members or associate members of the Law Society of Tasmania who have ten years or less post-admission experience in the legal profession within a State or Territory of Australia are deemed to be members of NWECL.
The NWECL welcomes members located from Latrobe though to Smithton and holds events in Devonport, Ulverstone and Burnie. The NWECL meets monthly to discuss matters for practitioners in the north-west. The NWECL also hosts regular social events such as bimonthly dinners, bi-monthly Friday night drinks and the annual quiz night. Additionally, each year the NWECL has the privilege of hosting the Tasmanian Legal Practice Course students for a tour of the north-west coast and to drinks and dinner with the NW Profession. The NWECL co-ordinates activities with the Law Society of Tasmania and other ECLs to host Continuing Professional Development (CPD presentations) aimed at providing early career lawyers with essential skills for practice.
The key goal of the NWECL is to promote the north-west coast as an area for practice and to support the retention of practitioners on the north-west coast. In achieving this goal the NWECL not only supports early career lawyers, but supports law graduates who are about to enter the profession, and encourages them to seek the opportunities for practice that the NW provides.
