Tasmania Legal Aid

Everyone can receive free legal advice from the Tasmania Legal Aid telephone advice service. You will speak directly to a lawyer. If you are calling from within Tasmania it is only the cost of a local call. The Tasmania Legal Aid telephone advice service, 1300 366 611, is available from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. If you are calling from interstate, contact Legal Aid on (03) 6236 3800.

In addition to legal advice this service can:

  • provide you with details of your nearest Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations or Notary Public;
  • provide your organisation with information regarding a booking for a free community legal education session;
  • they are able to offer sessions on a broad range of legal topics; and
  • help you choose a lawyer to suit your needs – contact Tasmania Legal Aid for a referral.

Tasmania Legal Aid Senior Assist
Senior Assist is a specialist elder abuse unit within Tasmania Legal Aid funded to assist clients over 65, or over 50 if they identify as aboriginal, or Torres Strait Islander, who are experiencing, or are risk of elder abuse. Senior Assist is an integrated service comprising legal practitioners and case managers/social workers providing free support and legal assistance to these clients.

Many of clients require a Will, enduring power of attorney, and enduring guardian, but do not have the financial resources to pay professional legal fees. Senior Assist is compiling a list of firms in Tasmania, who can offer estate planning services at a reduced rate to these clients. Interested law firms can contact Gemma Misrachi, Manager, Senior Assist, on (03) 6236 3841 or senior.assist@legalaid.tas.gov.au.
