Scrap Mandatory Penalties From The Anti-Protest Laws

The Law Society of Tasmania is pleased to hear that Ms Rosemary Armitage MLC supports the removal of all mandatory penalties from the Government’s anti-protest legislation.

The Society’s President Matthew Verney has said “it is clear that Ms Armitage understands the important of the courts having discretion in penalty imposition to ensure that the penalties imposed fit the offence, not a one size fits all. Hopefully the other MLC’s will agree and support the removal of all mandatory penalties from the Bill.”

Ms Armitage has proposed amendments to the Bill to remove all mandatory penalties. The Law Society supports those amendments.
