Review of Legal Aid Commission Welcomed by the Law Society

Today the Attorney General has announced that the Honourable Peter Evans will be appointed to conduct a review of the operation of the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania. The Law Society advocated for such a review several months ago as being essential. The review announced today is fully supported by the law Society.

The Law Society President Matthew Verney has said today “we welcome the review announced by the Attorney General. It has been the view of the Law Society that the most efficient method of delivery of legally aided services is through the private profession. We remain concerned that the cost of actually running the Legal Aid Commission has expanded dramatically and that this is probably at the expense of funding being available for the actual representation of clients.”

The Attorney General has also announced that Mr Patrick Lunn has been appointed as the new Chair of the Legal Aid Commission. The Law Society congratulates Mr Lunn.
