Tasmania Legal Aid is pleased to announce the release of the Independent Children’s Lawyer (ICL) Panel Document, which establishes the framework for the recruitment and ongoing requirements of ICLs in Tasmania.
ICLs play a crucial role in family law proceedings, advocating for the best interests of children in complex and often challenging circumstances. Tasmania is fortunate to have a dedicated and highly skilled panel of ICLs who provide exceptional representation for children across the state. This new document ensures that we continue to uphold the high standard and quality of representation that Tasmanian children deserve.
The document was developed in consultation with key stakeholders, including the judiciary, experienced ICLs, and representatives from the Office of the Commissioner for Children and Young People. It provides clear guidance for existing and aspiring ICLs and supports the ongoing professional development of practitioners undertaking this important work.

The ICL Panel Document sets out a clear pathway to becoming an ICL, with revised eligibility and a focus on support and mentoring.
