Election Law Society President
The Council of the Law Society of Tasmania elected Crystal Garwood as its new President on 19 October 2019.
Ms Garwood is an experienced commercial and employment practitioner based on the north west coast, having practised for over eleven years. She has served the Society as a past President of the North West Young Lawyers Committee; and as a member of the Employment and Property and Commercial Law Committees for over eight years. This will be her seventh year on Council as a leader of the profession.
As a passionate, capable and engaged young female, Ms Garwood said, ‘I look forward to leading the Law Society as it continues its important work as the voice of the profession.’ Ms Garwood is the first female President of the Law Society in thirteen years and is only the third female to ever hold the position in Tasmania.
Ms Garwood intends as one of her focuses to advocate for the attraction of young lawyers to the north and north west regions and to work to increase retention rates of lawyers at a state-wide level. She brings with her innovative ideas for health and wellbeing within the profession.
The President’s Charity will be the Cancer Council Tasmania.
