Election of New President
The Council of the Law Society of Tasmania on 22 October 2018 elected Evan Hughes as its President. Evan is a Principal of the Launceston firm, Rae & Partners.
Evan practises in civil and criminal litigation in the north and north west coast of Tasmania. He is a graduate of the University of Tasmania, married with two children and has practiced law for twenty years. Evan looks forward to the opportunity to continue the important work of the Society and its role as a specialist contributor to the debate on law reform, access to justice issues and addressing the challenges faced by the profession both now and into the future.
“I see the Society as a strong and relevant voice on issues that affect the profession and access to justice and I look forward to the opportunity I now have to be more closely involved in the ongoing work of the Society. Some of the priorities I have for the next 12 months include assisting the Law Council of Australia in its response to the Federal Government’s proposed changes to the Federal Court and Family Court, addressing the retention of young practitioners in the profession particularly in rural and regional areas of the state as well as the retention of female practitioners and ensuring the removal of any barriers to their career advancement and appointment to positions of importance. I have a particular interest in the way we can use technology to improve the way we do things and improving the services available to members of the profession. The health and wellbeing of lawyers, in particular mental health, remains one of my key areas of concern and the steps that we can take to assist those undertaking what is an inherently stressful occupation.”
