Mr Lloyd Babb SC has been appointed to help ensure that all Tasmanians have access to an efficient and effective justice system, with court proceedings finalised in a timely manner.
Mr Babb will focus on applying a systems approach to managing existing court backlogs, identifying strategies and mechanisms to support case flow, and developing a framework to measure the effectiveness of any new strategies.
The Attorney General is pleased to announce that Mr Lloyd Babb SC, who is conducting the Third Party Review of Backlogs in the Tasmanian Court System 2026 (the Review), is commencing a period of public consultation on the Review.
The Review is focusing on practical options and recommendations to improve service delivery in the Tasmanian justice system, whilst reducing the backlog of pending matters.
The public consultation process will provide an opportunity for all members of the community to have their say and provide submissions on matters relevant to Mr Babb’s review. Mr Babb will consider all submissions which will help to inform his final report.
Public consultation on the Review will be open for approximately four weeks, from 18 March to 15 April 2026. Submissions to the Review can be made through the Department of Justice’s community consultation website at https://www.justice.tas.gov.au/community-consultation.
Improving access to justice is key priority for the Tasmanian Government, and this independent review will support the operation of the legal system by identifying practical solutions to reduce delays, improve efficiency, and ensure timely outcomes for all court users.
Mr Babb SC’s final report to Government is expected by 30 June 2026.
