The Society congratulates Regina Weiss, Barrister at Derwent & Tamar Chambers, on her win a second year in a row. Regina was nominated earlier this year and has again brought back to Tasmania the Women in Law – Barrister of the Year Award.
These awards are the benchmark for excellence, recognising the best and brightest women across the Australian legal industry.
Regina’s highly distinguished career includes roles as a Federal Prosecutor and as prosecution trial lawyer at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. More recently, Regina has led the legal teams of several federal government agencies and conducted various reviews into historical abuse matters.
Regina stated that ‘there was such a talented pool of women and they gave it to the barrister that spruiks ‘law not war’ – now that tells me the Australian Legal Profession remains committed to the rule of law, and the rule of international law’.
Regina dedicated her award speech once more to women in law in conflict zones and to the late Ben Ferencz, who coined the mantra “law not war” – he was a prosecutor at Nuremberg, which was apt as this week marks 80 years since the first war crimes trial started in Nuremberg.
