Join Pip Monk, Principal, Monk Lawyers and Lisa Pennington, Crown Counsel with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions who present a topic of benefit to practitioners starting out, or early in, their criminal law practice. They are joined by Maire MacCana and Elise Okell from the Witness Intermediary Scheme. This session covers the following topics.
- Intermediaries form a new and important part of our criminal justice system, but their role can be misunderstood.
- Defence counsel Pip Monk and Crown Counsel Lisa Pennington will be joined by members of the intermediary panel to demonstrate how each party can utilise intermediaries, with real world examples and demonstrations.
- Counsel and the intermediaries will also be available to answer questions about the scheme and its potential expansion to include defendants, sharing different perspectives on the benefits and potential pitfalls.

About the Presenter:
Pip Monk is the principal lawyer and director of Monk Lawyers. Pip specialises in criminal defence and practices across the summary and indictable jurisdictions. Pip completed the Legal Practice Course in 2011 and began practice in South Australia before returning to Tasmania in 2013 and commencing at Legal Aid. Pip enjoys mentoring young practitioners, and has led the Court Duty Lawyer training for the past 2 years. Pip is the Chair of the Law Society of Tasmania's Criminal Law Committee and is a member of the Law Society of Tasmania Council.
Lisa Pennington, Crown Counsel, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions
About the Presenter:
Lisa Pennington is Crown Counsel with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. She graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws in 2012 and was admitted to practice in 2013. She worked as an Associate to the Honourable Justice Wood at the Supreme Court of Tasmania between 2013-2015, before commencing practice with the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania (now Tasmania Legal Aid). Since 2016, employed as Crown Counsel, she has prosecuted mostly indictable crime before the Supreme Court of Tasmania. In recent years, she has primarily conducted trials before the Supreme Court of Tasmania involving sexual assault and family violence, including trials and other proceedings involving child victims and the use of witness intermediaries. Lisa also acts as Deputy Chair of the Board of Governance of the Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS).
